Mommy & Madeleine 12/07

In addition to being mom to my little Madeleine and “Auntie Becky” to 2 gorgeous little nieces, I have happily worked with kids for years!

I graduated from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 2000 with a BFA in Community Art Education. During my undergraduate, and for two years that followed graduation, I worked in the Office of Community Service Learning. We used grant money to fund programs that allowed art students to put their talents to good use in some type of service project. One of our most notable programs was called “Sharing Our Stories”. Each year we worked with 40 2nd graders from a Boston Public Elementary school to produce illustrated autobiographies.

After meeting a Child Life Specialist while working with some art students on murals in a local hospital, I decided to pursue a M.S. in Child Life and Family Centered Care at Wheelock College. My internships allowed me to gain experience preparing children and families for pediatric surgeries, lead a support group for grieving children, and interact with children facing life threatening illness at the world renowned Children’s Hospital of Boston, help children prepare for surgery in a developmentally appropriate way for Boston’s city hospital, Boston Medical Center and to lead grief support sessions for The Good Grief Program. Upon graduating, I worked at Boston Medical Center on the 42 bed Pediatric Unit/5 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit/and the Radiology Department. As the only Child Life Specialist in these areas, I worked with children to normalize the hospital experience through play and helped them cope with the pain & stress associated with hospitalization and illness.

I have had the privilege to be let into the worlds of these children who dealt with the most private and difficult of situations…grief, pain, poverty, neglect, abuse, illness and stress. In this current phase of my life, I am using all that the knowledge and patience I have gained over the years to raise my own children. I am committed to giving my kids the safest most nurturing environment possible.

I was raised on tofu, vitamins, and Chiropractic care so it’s easy to see where my non-toxic obsession began. As I discover ways to make my family greener and healthier, I share them with you in this blog. I also write about products that we have found which are just plain fun or simplify our lives in someway. Who couldn’t use tips about things like that??

I’m currently a stay at home mom and I’m really looking to keep it that way at least while Madeleine (and any brothers or sisters she might have in the next couple of years!!) are really young. This blog is fun for me, but I also hope that people will find my suggestions/reviews/comments etc helpful and chose to buy things through the links on the site. How does that all work you might be asking yourself? Well…I have created relationships through what’s called “affiliate programs” with certain stores. They offer you the products at the same exact price, BUT they pay me a small commission for sending you their way. I hope that after learning about something on the site that you’d like to try, you’ll consider purchasing through the site so I can keep at this.

I am by no means an expert. I’m just a mom who cares about the environment and her family. I hope you have fun here and that these writings help you to make greener healthier choices for you and your family.

Feel free to post comments on the site or email me anytime!
