Nature BabyCare diapers…our new diaper of choice

February 11th, 2008

We have officially moved to Nature BabyCare diapers, which were developed by a mom who decided that the world needed a better eco-friendly diaper. I felt good about using 7th Generation, but I feel even better about using these. These diapers are so earth friendly that even the packaging is compostable. Even better…the wipes package is too! Plus, I really like knowing that my baby isn’t sitting in a pile chemicals…how can that be safe?
Here is the scoop:

Features and Benefits of Nature BabyCare:
-Chlorine-free absorbent materials – does not contribute to dioxin pollution
-100 % compostable back sheet – NO plastic - reduce the greenhouse affect
-100 % compostable distribution layer – NO plastic - reduce the greenhouse affect
-100 % compostable consumer packaging – No plastic - reduce the greenhouse affect
-No latex, fragrance, or TBT (tributyl tin)

I’m not going to lie, they are definitely more expensive than regular disposable diapers, but for my husband and I eco-friendly diapers are a priority.

A friend turned me on to Ideal Bite, whose moto  is “a sassier side of green”, a few months ago. I signed up for the daily tips and have been really impressed. That’s actually where I first heard that Methods facilities where carbon neutral. It’s a short, interesting, easy to read email with good green information. Check it out!

Earth Brights

February 6th, 2008

Earth Bright RattleSassy has a new line of teether rattles called “Earth Brights”. I’m holding the unopened “wooden trio” toy that I bought about a month ago, but haven’t yet introduced to Madeleine. I commend Sassy for there earth friendly efforts on this one. The toy is made from different fabrics and wooden pieces. They claim the toy is made from quality hardwoods, select fabrics and water-based finishes. They are really really cute. Madeleine has been happily chewing on the bird rattle for a few weeks now.

I think I am most impressed by the unique environmentally friendly packaging. Instead of a bunch of hard to open (I always hurt myself!) plastic packaging that just gets thrown away, these toys are attached to a piece of recycled card board with a few bits of twine. I appreciate that I can recycle the packaging instead of feeling bad about throwing it away. Why does packaging have to be so environmentally UNfriendly? Apparently…it doesn’t. The OTHER Seinfeld

February 3rd, 2008

Jessica Seinfeld

I NEVER get to watch Oprah so I set my DVR and occasionally scroll through my recordings and pick out a show or 2 to watch when my husband isn’t home. Gotta love a little girl time with Oprah. Anyway… I almost deleted the show that Jessica Seinfeld was on, but luckily I remembered that my friend told me that I HAD to watch it. I thought Jessica was great on the show. She brought some sample foods for Oprah to try and she seemed to really enjoy them. How smart…just SNEAK the veggies into your families food instead of arguing with them about it. Brilliant.

Jessica has some awesome ideas in this book. The whole idea is to steam vegetables, puree them and them slip them into your meals without the kids realizing. She’s got some good ones like putting spinach in brownies and butternut squash into mac and cheese. I’m really impressed…not to mention the fact that the book itself is adorable!

Dirty Dozen

February 2nd, 2008

This is super important information!! The Environmental Working group has put out a list of the best (best=least amount of pesticides) and worst (worst=the highest levels of pesticides) fruits and vegetables. They have named this list the “Dirty Dozen”. If you are only able to buy certain organic foods for your family, this is good information to have because it will allow you to avoid the worst offenders!

If you click here you can see the list and print out a copy for your wallet.
